13139301_lIf you are like most people, you are buried in an endless to-do list fraught with projects, deadlines and pressure, pressure, pressure. Before you add more to the list, take some time to reflect on what you have accomplished in the past week, month and year.

The concept of acknowledging accomplishments is not just a feel-good exercise. Looking back is a strategy that is useful for you as an individual—but it’s also an important action to take with your team and your family. Our culture is obsessed with the future and with the goal of relentlessly moving forward—yet, being in a constant state of “treadmill living” can cause more stress or even burn-out, making all of that action seem futile.

When was the last time you reflected on your recent accomplishments? If you are looking for a topic for your next team meeting, take some time to make note of past successes and report them—the more you find, the better. Don’t worry that reflection on past success may slow you down or make your team (or kids) complacent; it will actually have the opposite effect. Tracking and acknowledging past success builds esteem, reinforces what can be done and engages the part of the brain responsible for ideas, resourcefulness and holistic thinking.
