Getting business to flow

 In Career Change, Stress

file000178895435Many people I talk to these days are feeling a bit overwhelmed and concerned about their future. Even when you feel like you are already doing everything you can it is important to try some new strategies to get things flowing in the right direction. Sometimes it’s a challenge to come up with ideas when stress is high.

One of the best things you can do for business when times are tough is to find someone you can help with their business. I am not entirely sure why helping others helps build business—but it does! Maybe it is because we feel better and that is reflected in our work, or maybe it is karma. Who knows?

Here are three quick ideas you can try right away:

  1. Refer your favorite vendors to others– it only takes a few minutes to gather the contact information for your tech company, graphics person, carpet company or insurance broker and send it in a note to people in your network who might need that service. Be thoughtful about it instead of just spamming. Your vendor will be grateful for the effort and your colleagues can hire someone already vetted.
  2. Mentor someone at work– keep an eye out for a newcomer or an up-and-comer at work who might need a few tips or a supportive word now and then. Most of us with any measure of success had some help along the way.
  3. Write a positive note or letter to someone (or about them)– it is rare to get unsolicited encouragement in today’s busy world. Think of someone in your people network who might need a note of encouragement or condolence or maybe a written recommendation, testimony or congratulations. As you send it you will feel an instant lift.

Do you have any examples of times where you were stressed and helping someone else ended up helping you? If so, would you share them below in the comments:
