Brenda’s 2018 Book List

 In Books and Resources

Are you tracking your reading yet? Each year what I read and how much I read always surprises me. And, make no mistake—the fact that I publish this list puts a nice kind of pressure on me to keep reading. This year I really enjoyed some fiction which is not my usual focus. I separated the lists for you in case you are interested in one kind over another.

HERE’S IS MY LIST FOR THE YEAR AND A SHORT COMMENT OR REVIEW ON EACH:

Non-Fiction Books

Seven Brief Lessons on Physics: By Carlo Rovelli

Yes. Great book if you have a physics person in your life (I have my son) or if you just like to learn stuff.

Whatever Arises, Love That: A Love Revolution That Begins with You by Matt Kahn

Not sure. I read this book but cannot recall anything about it which is interesting. I think it was too basic for me.

Emergenetics: Tap Into the New Science of Success by Geil Browning, PhD

Yes. If you have been tested using the Emergenetics profile you will like this book. If not, get tested.

You Are a Badass®: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero

It depends. I was expecting a lot with that title. It is a basic mindset book for women. If you are already past the basics-see The Year of Yes below.

Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McGowan

Yes. This is one of my all-time favorite business books. I listened to it this year and it helped even more.

Million Dollar Coaching: Build a World-Class Practice by Helping Others Succeed by Alan Weiss

Yes. Alan Weiss is the master when it comes to consulting and his coaching book delivers as well.

Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand In the Sun and Be Your Own Person by Shonda Rhimes

Yes. She’s an amazing writer and this book could have been called How to Say NO! Great read.

Death by Meeting: A Leadership Fable…About Solving the Most Painful Problem in Business by Patrick Lencioni

Yes. Lencioni delivers every, single time. Transform your meetings and your leadership. Great to listen to as well.

Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Clason

Yes. I have been wanting to listen to this for years. Only 4 hours. Good fable for saving and being wise with money.

The Obstacle is the Way: The Ancient Art of Turning Adversity to Advantage by Ryan Holiday

Yes. This was a favorite this year. It is like resilience on steroids. I listened-to and read this book.

Virtual Teams For Dummies: Tara Powers:

Yes. Everything you need to know about leading or being a virtual worker. Lots of fresh ideas and angles on the most popular way of working in the US.

Fiction and Memoir

Swimming with Elephants: My Unexpected Pilgrimage from Physician to Healer by Sarah Bamford Seidelmann

Yes. An MD and mother travels to India to do the famous Pilgrimage and takes the reader with her.

The Playboy Prince: Cordina’s Royal Family by Nora Roberts

Yes. This was my first ever “romance” book—besides Twilight. Loved it—though I was a third of the way through it before I flipped it over and saw it was a Harlequin Romance—but don’t tell anyone!

Cordina’s Crown Jewel (The Royals of Cordina) by Nora Roberts

Yes. Same review as above. Devoured it.

Any Place I Hang My Hat: A Novel by Susan Isaacs

Yes. A well-written novel/memoir written by a women in search of answers in her life. Excellent.

The Soul of an Octopus: A Surprising Exploration into the Wonder of Consciousness by Sy Montgomery

Yes. This book surprised me. I learned so much about Octopuses (not Octopi) and loved the story woven around these giant, brilliant creatures.

Nightshade: Night Tales by Nora Roberts

Yes. Another “romance” but this was a teeny bit darker than the others-so not for me.

The Poisonwood Bible: A Novel by Barbara Kingsolver

Yes. I am late with some of the most famous reads like this one. But I loved it. No wonder everyone has read it.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling

Yes. My son read the entire series many times over so I finally gave it a shot. What’s not to like?

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling

Yes. See above.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling

Yes. See above.

The Island House: A Novel by Nancy Thayer

Yes. Another gift in that I have never read this genre till this year. Loved it. Great beach book.

The Guest Cottage: A Novel by Nancy Thayer

Yes. I liked her other book so much I read this one too. Even better.

Poser: My Life in Twenty-three Yoga Poses by Claire Dederer

Yes. Memoir with yoga and motherhood as a feature. Funny and touching.
